Slow Cooker Turkey Breast

This slow cooker turkey breast is coated in a seasoned herb butter, then placed in the crock pot to cook to tender perfection. It’s the perfect way to free up oven space for your big holiday meal, and the turkey comes out perfect every time!

I love to make this slow cooker turkey, it’s a fuss free way to have a delicious and elegant main course. I serve my crock pot turkey with some of our favorite side dishes like cranberry jello salad and bacon brussels sprouts. Don’t forget the pecan pie bars and pumpkin meringue pie for dessert!

Can you believe that such a browned and succulent turkey breast can come from a slow cooker? It’s true, and it couldn’t be any easier to make. Plus there are plenty of drippings which make the best gravy.

HOW DO YOU MAKE SLOW COOKER TURKEY BREAST?

This recipe starts with a seasoned butter, which is made with a blend of herbs and spices. The butter goes on top of, and underneath the turkey skin. The turkey breast then goes into the crock pot and simmers all day until it’s tender and flavorful.

The bottom of the slow cooker gets lined with thick slices of onion, which serves as a rack to elevate the turkey breast so it doesn’t sit in a bunch of liquid. You want your onion slices to be about 1 inch thick. As a bonus, the onion flavors the cooking liquid which forms the base of the gravy.

YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary (1 tablespoon fresh)
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme (1 tablespoon fresh)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (I used granulated garlic)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
  • 2-1/2 pounds bone-in turkey breast half
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 celery stalk, chopped
  • 1 carrot, chopped
  • 20 cloves garlic, unpeeled

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Ideal slow cooker size: 5- to 6-Quart.
  • Place the onion, carrot and celery in bottom of the slow cooker.
  • Combine the seasonings in a small bowl. Rub the turkey breast with the seasoning blend on the meat either under the skin or on top of it, whichever you prefer.
  • Place the turkey breast on top of the vegetables. Add the garlic cloves around the turkey breast.
  • Cover and cook until the turkey is fork-tender and the garlic is very soft. (You know it is done done when an instant read thermometer registers 165 degrees.) This should take from 3 to 4 hours on LOW depending on how hot your slow cooker cooks. To avoid drying out your turkey, don’t use the HIGH setting!
  • Remove the garlic and set aside.
  • Transfer the turkey to a platter and remove the skin.
  •  Strain the vegetables from the broth and discard them. Remove any fat from the broth.
  • Serve turkey with the broth and garlic.
