There is something wonderfully beautiful about a mother’s love. She will do anything for her children, even if that means giving her life for their protection.
The child doesn’t even have to be her own. Adoptive mothers will take in an orphaned child and love them like her own.
We usually think of adoption in the human realm, but there have also been incredible instances of this adoptive love in the animal kingdom.
We’ve seen grieving mother horses who lost their foals take orphaned babies under their care. There have even been instances of mother tigers nursing lion or cheetah cubs after their mothers passed away or rejected them.
These stories are truly remarkable, but the story you are about to read is so incredible that some might even call it a miracle.
Alejandra Griffa was in the parking lot outside her home in Argentina when she heard a muffled cry coming from somewhere nearby.
Concerned, she followed the noise and found a stray mother dog huddled against the cold. Snuggled up next to her for warmth were six young puppies.
But as Alejandra got closer, she noticed something sticking up in the midst of the litter that left her stunned.
It was a tiny human hand.
Alejandra quickly scooped up the one-month-old baby girl and took her to the hospital. Amazingly, doctors said that with some time and care the baby would recover from the trauma she had faced and be just fine.
Her miraculous survival is due in large part to the street dog Alejandra named Way.
The baby’s mother had abandoned her, leaving her to die in the cold. When Way found the baby, her maternal instincts immediately kicked in. Despite being hungry herself and needing to take care of her own puppies, Way took the baby in as her own, keeping her safe and warm until help arrived.
Local authorities carried out an investigation and found the baby’s 33-year-old mother. She was suffering from severe depression and is now receiving psychological help.
What a remarkable story of love and compassion! We humans could learn much from Way’s example.
