Every time she went to visit her grandma, she noticed a 7-year-old boy there too. One day, she asked him why he came 5 times a day… she would never forget his reply
Wilma is the sick grandma of Darrien – a hospital worker who works long shifts but still enjoys making a difference in the lives of her patients.
Darrien often visited Wilma to help and assist her as she was sick despite her working a full time job.
Unbeknown to Darrien, Wilma was already being guarded by her neighbour!
Wilma received the sad news two years ago and found out se suffered from lung cancer. She went through a series of medication and surgery to the point that she had her lung removed to try and make her better again.
Naturally, Wilma required a long time to recover and following 6 months after her surgery, she received bad news again – this time she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Darrien had been trying to convince Wilma to move in with her for years so that she could be able to take care of her. However, as with many old women, Wilma was too stubborn and wanted to remain in her home that she had been in for over 38 years.
Darrien explained that her grandma refused to leave her home because of her love for independence.
She goes on to say that this does not help with that fact that the area that her grandma lives in is not so good.
But right in this poor estate, there is a speckle of hope that shines through such sad times.
“I work full time in the emergency department in our hometown on night shift,” Darrien said. “That alone keeps my schedule very limited, along with being a full-time student. We don’t have much family here, so getting Nana back and forth to treatment every day and being able to check on her frequently (or as much as I would like) has been difficult for me to do. This is where her beautiful neighbours come into play.
“They check on her multiple times throughout the day and have even helped me get her to chemotherapy and radiation appointments. They are honestly what keeps Nana going. I can’t go over to her home without someone at some point yelling ‘Hey Ms. Wilma, How ya doing?’ She knows everyone by name and they know and love her just as much as I do.”
One of Wilma’s neighbours has shown incredible kindness as he lights up her life. His name is Caleb, a funny 7-year-old boy.
Caleb lives in the house right next to Wilma with his father, two siblings and his grandmother. He enjoys spending time with Wilma and often spends time sitting on her porch and talking to her for hours on all types of topics.
“My nana is so attached to him and the bond they have is incredible. He doesn’t come from much, but you can tell he has been raised on love. He will bust out a dance move in a heartbeat, will go on and on about how much he loves school, and make you laugh until you cry. This kid deserves the love he has received from this post. He stands out from the norm and brings so much joy into everyone’s life he is around.
“I am so thankful for him and the love he has shown my grandmother. I know for certain it has helped her on her hardest days. He will never know how much I truly appreciate him. I hope one day he realizes the impact he has left on her life and mine as well.”
Although Wilma will be going through another thirty rounds of chemo therapy, she is still happy to have her family and Caleb to support her and be with her every day.
Caleb, despite his age has proven that age and gender doesn’t really matter but only love and kindness with persevere. Share this with your family and friends.
